F1 2023 Insider’s Guide No. 19 – Austin

A popular recent addition to the Formula One calendar, Austin’s Circuit of The Americas has been praised by drivers and fans alike for its design. It’s a fast, new circuit and it includes some unique features like a massive observation tower at its centre and even an amphitheatre for rock concerts.

United States Grands Prix here have smashed attendance records, showing how keen Americans have become on F1 after the decades of dominance from the home-grown IndyCar and NASCAR races.

Texas is always a pleasure to explore - this huge state boasts deserts and beaches, cowboys and ranches, Tex-Mex cuisine, historic sights like The Alamo and contemporary cities like Houston, San Antonio and Dallas. Austin is the capital of Texas and is also known as the rock ‘n’ roll capital of the state; a liberal mecca for visitors, students and creatives.

What's a vibrant neighbourhood in the city?

SoCo – Austin is known for its counter-culture, its alternative vibes and its creative scene. These come together in neighbourhoods like SoCo (South of Congress). Here you can find vegan food, record stores, baristas slinging third-wave flat whites and thrift stores packed with normcore necessities. Don’t miss the BBQ street food stands doing mixed plates of meat or brisket burgers.

Where can you get back to nature?

Ladybird Lake – Austin can get pretty hot and pretty busy so what better place to relax than by the shore of Lady Bird Lake, which stretches across the heart of the city. This lake is the playground of the city - with parks and swimming pools like Barton Springs Pool and Deep Eddy Pool on its fringes. The lake is open for fishing and boating and runners pound the pavements around its perimeter.

Where can you revive yourself?

Fairmont Austin – One of the most distinctive landmarks in Central Austin, the Fairmont’s facade of mirrored glass towers over the surrounding streets. There’s a perfect pool for reviving yourself with a sundeck and luxurious rooms. Nearby is the famous Iron Works BBQ or you could dine in at the highly regarded Garrison restaurant at the hotel.

Where is great for a visit?

San Antonio + Estancia Norte – San Antonio is the next city along from Austin and famed as a relaxed, hospitable destination. Its River Walk is a popular attraction and you can learn about Texan history at the famous Alamo. Spend a night over in San Antonio at Estancia Norte, a Tapestry Collection property. This hotel boasts retro Mission decor with plenty of woven fabrics, leather and dark accents.

Where's great for dinner and drinks?

The Otis – Self-declared hipster hangout The Otis is bang in the Campus District surrounded by students. It has the Otopia Rooftop for perfect sundowners and the Acre 41 Steak Restaurant. The hotel, the first for Autograph Collection in Austin, has on-trend decor and the piece de resistance is the unbelievable vinyl record store in the lobby - this is a hotel that lives and breathes music.

Where can you experience rock 'n' roll Austin?

Downtown and 6th Street – Austin is the home of the world-renowned SXSW festival of music, film, tech and ideas. Every March the city comes alive with all the venues on 6th Street throwing parties and putting on bands. Stay at the Canopy, Driskill, Tommy or Westin right here in the middle of town to enjoy the music and those legendary Texas vibes.

Where is a great place to stay after the United States Grand Prix?

Indigo Downtown – Indigo is a perfect place to stay after the race - easily accessed from Interstate 35. The pretty Waller Creek runs past, with its own walking trail. And the Texas State Capitol is just a couple of blocks away. There’s a year-round pool terrace and slick modern decor including a neon artwork in the lobby reading: You’re weird but I love you!
